Survival Horror and Psychological Horror peak in October too. Counted from Steam store pages as of 22 September 2026.

## Horror releases on Steam by month

Eleven months hold between 6.9% and 9.0% of the genre each. October holds 12.1%. January is the quietest month, with 1,072 releases, and October has 76% more. The two largest horror subgenres follow the same curve, with an even sharper peak in Survival Horror.

| Month | Horror releases | Horror share | Survival Horror | Psychological Horror |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| January | 1,072 | 6.9% | 7.2% | 7.4% |
| February | 1,137 | 7.3% | 6.8% | 7.3% |
| March | 1,279 | 8.2% | 8.4% | 8.6% |
| April | 1,284 | 8.2% | 8.0% | 8.2% |
| May | 1,289 | 8.3% | 8.4% | 8.5% |
| June | 1,157 | 7.4% | 7.7% | 7.3% |
| July | 1,402 | 9.0% | 8.9% | 9.0% |
| August | 1,408 | 9.0% | 8.9% | 9.2% |
| September | 1,332 | 8.5% | 8.3% | 8.5% |
| October | 1,887 | 12.1% | 12.6% | 11.0% |
| November | 1,202 | 7.7% | 7.5% | 7.5% |
| December | 1,131 | 7.3% | 7.3% | 7.3% |

Share is a month's releases divided by all dated releases carrying the tag, across every year on record. A game can carry several horror tags and is counted under each.

## Is October the busiest month for every genre?

No. Most of Steam ships in summer: of the 60 genres on the [genre seasonality](https://app.playrecon.com/seasons) page, 29 peak in August, 16 in July and 8 in September. Five peak in October, and three of those five are horror. At the other end, Party Game, Cozy and Idler put fewer of their games into October than any other genre.

| Genre | October share | Busiest month |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Survival Horror | 12.6% | October |
| Horror | 12.1% | October |
| Psychological Horror | 11.0% | October |
| Stealth | 10.4% | October |
| Action-Adventure | 9.3% | October |
| Median of all 60 genres | 8.0% | August for 29 of 60 |
| Idler | 6.0% | July |
| Cozy | 5.9% | September |
| Party Game | 5.5% | August |

## Why horror clusters in October

The record counts releases. It does not say why they cluster, and two explanations fit the same spike.

- [Observed] Steam Scream V, Valve's horror sale, runs 26 October to 2 November 2026. Its theme is horror games and Halloween-centric games. (Steamworks, upcoming Steam events · 2026-09-27)
- [Observed] The October Steam Next Fest runs 19 to 26 October 2026, the week before it. (Steamworks, upcoming Steam events · 2026-09-27)
- [Inference] Halloween moves horror demand and store attention into late October, and developers time releases to meet it.
- [Inference] The habit feeds itself: developers ship horror in October because other horror ships in October, whatever the demand does.

These counts pool every year, so they cannot separate the two. A split by year would: if the October share grew once Valve began running a horror sale, the demand explanation gets stronger.

## What it means for a horror launch window

- An October release shares the month with the largest horror cohort of the year: 45% more horror games than an average month.
- Late October 2026 stacks three things into two weeks: Next Fest, the Steam Scream sale and the genre's release peak.
- Whether the crowd costs more visibility than the season gives back is not in these counts. Look at the week, not the month: [Window Finder](https://app.playrecon.com/window) scores every week by how many games in your genre are scheduled against it.

## What this data does not say

- **Nothing about sales.** These are release counts. Steam does not publish sales, and a crowded month is not a bad month by itself.
- **Nothing about 2026 alone.** All observed years are pooled. What is scheduled this October is on the [release calendar](https://app.playrecon.com/calendar).
- **Tags are today's tags.** Developers and players apply Steam tags, and they change after launch. A game is counted under the tags its store page carries on the snapshot date.

## How we counted

For each tag, we take every released game carrying it, group the games by the month of the release date on their Steam store page and divide by the tag's total. Store pages are re-read hourly; the aggregate behind this article was rebuilt on 22 September 2026. The same numbers are live on the [genre seasonality](https://app.playrecon.com/seasons) page, and the day-by-day picture for the genre is on the [horror release density](https://app.playrecon.com/heatmap?tag=Horror) map.
